Academic capitalism (Slaughter and Leslie, 2004) and its neoliberal rationalities, the dominant narratives within the colonial ventures, and a dominant and unreflective use of English in the production of textual knowledge have produced uneven structures in the academic publishing space, a homogenization of the concept of ‘international’ (Paasi 2005, 2015; Tietze and Dick, 2013; Péloquin, 2017). The contribution of the present research to this debate is the identification of points of hegemonic disruption in Latin America. We performed a case study on six articles written in Spanish and Portuguese of two Latin American Biotechnology journals with the purpose of identifying their spatial reference pattern. Findings show a high use of references in Spanish and Portuguese (54,31% and 36.49%, respectively. We interpret complex linguistic referencing patterns - this is citing in languages other than English - as an environment that opens meanings and enriches discussion. Moreover, we conceive Latin America as a space of hegemonic struggle against English homogenization in Science, and the SciELO platform as the infrastructure with the potential to (hopefully) transform the current academic status quo.", "@xml:lang": "en"}}, "doi_data": {"doi": "10.4000/proceedings.elpub.2018.5", "resource": "http://elpub.episciences.org/4635", "collection": [{"item": {"@crawler": "iParadigms", "resource": "https://hal.science/hal-01816799v1/document"}, "@property": "crawler-based"}, {"item": {"resource": {"value": "https://hal.science/hal-01816799v1/document", "@mime_type": "application/pdf"}}, "@property": "text-mining"}]}, "keywords": {"0": "[SHS.INFO]Humanities and Social Sciences/Library and information sciences", "en": ["Latin America", "English as a lingua franca", "geopolitics of knowledge"]}, "@language": "en", "contributors": {"person_name": [{"surname": "Rivera-López", "@sequence": "first", "given_name": "Bárbara", "affiliations": {"institution": {"institution_name": "Universidad Mayor"}}, "@contributor_role": "author"}, {"surname": "Luci", "@sequence": "additional", "given_name": "Manuel", "affiliations": {"institution": {"institution_id": {"@type": "ror", "value": "https://ror.org/047gc3g35"}, "institution_name": "Universidad de Chile = University of Chile [Santiago]"}}, "@contributor_role": "author"}]}, "publisher_item": {"item_number": {"value": "4635", "@item_number_type": "article_number"}}, "acceptance_date": {"day": "22", "year": "2018", "month": "06", "@media_type": "online"}, "publication_date": {"day": "22", "year": "2018", "month": "06", "@media_type": "online"}, "@publication_type": "full_text"}, "journal_metadata": {"doi_data": {"doi": "10.46298/journals/elpub", "resource": "http://elpub.episciences.org"}, "@language": "en", "full_title": "ElPub - ELectronic PUBlishing"}}, "database": {"current": {"url": "http://elpub.episciences.org/4635", "flag": "imported", "type": {"title": "conferenceobject"}, "dates": {"posted_date": "2018-06-22 19:36:19", "publication_date": "2018-06-22 19:40:26", "modification_date": "2025-03-31 23:03:26", "first_submission_date": "2018-06-22 19:36:19"}, "files": {"link": "http://elpub.episciences.org/4635/pdf"}, "isTmp": false, "status": {"id": 16, "label": {"en": "published", "fr": "publié"}}, "volume": {"id": 339, "year": "2018", "number": 1, "titles": {"en": "Connecting the Knowledge Commons: From Projects to Sustainable Infrastructure"}, "position": "3", "settings": {"is_open": false, "is_current_issue": false, "is_special_issue": false}, "descriptions": {"en": "ELPUB 2018 marks the 22nd edition of the International Conference in ELectronic PUBlishing and the 10th anniversary of the meeting being held in Toronto."}, "has_proceedings": false, "bibliographical_references": ""}, "journal": {"id": 16, "url": "http://elpub.episciences.org", "code": "elpub", "name": "ElPub - ELectronic PUBlishing"}, "metrics": {"file_count": 257, "page_count": 296}, "section": {"id": 91, "titles": {"en": "Poster Abstracts"}, "position": 4, "settings": {"is_open": true}, "descriptions": null}, "version": 1, "cited_by": null, "mainPdfUrl": "https://hal.science/hal-01816799v1/document", "repository": {"id": "1", "name": "HAL", "type": "repository", "status": "1", "api_url": "https://api.archives-ouvertes.fr", "doc_url": "https://hal.science/hal-01816799v1", "base_url": "https://api.archives-ouvertes.fr/oai/hal/", "paper_url": "https://hal.science/hal-01816799v1/document", "doi_prefix": "", "identifier": "oai:HAL:hal-01816799v1"}, "identifiers": {"concept_identifier": null, "document_item_number": 4635, "permanent_item_number": 4635, "repository_identifier": "hal-01816799"}, "classifications": [], "original_language": "en", "position_in_volume": 26, "graphical_abstract_file": ""}, "previous_versions": null, "first_version_item_number": 4635, "latest_version_item_number": 4635}}
