Using the field of anthropology, this analysis presents the participation incentives and advantages behind of an open access model in which a journal article’s publication costs are paid by either (a) the research funder(s) acknowledged by the article or, if without a funder, (b) the libraries whose patrons read and utilize the research. Using both hypothetical and actual examples, the paper describes how the existing metadata systems such as Crossref’s Open Funder Registry can be utilized to automate the implementation of the model. It also addresses the model’s economic impact, from an initial pilot study to large-scale implementation, for the principal stakeholders in scholarly communication.
<publication_date media_type="online"><month>06</month><day>11</day><year>2019</year></publication_date><acceptance_date media_type="online"><month>06</month><day>11</day><year>2019</year></acceptance_date><publisher_item><item_number item_number_type="article_number">5561</item_number></publisher_item><program xmlns="http://www.crossref.org/AccessIndicators.xsd" name="AccessIndicators"><free_to_read start_date="2019-06-11"/><license_ref applies_to="am" start_date="2019-06-11">https://about.hal.science/hal-authorisation-v1</license_ref><license_ref applies_to="vor" start_date="2019-06-11">https://about.hal.science/hal-authorisation-v1</license_ref><license_ref applies_to="tdm" start_date="2019-06-11">https://about.hal.science/hal-authorisation-v1</license_ref></program><program xmlns="http://www.crossref.org/relations.xsd"><related_item><intra_work_relation identifier-type="uri" relationship-type="isSameAs">https://hal.science/hal-02143129v1</intra_work_relation></related_item></program><doi_data><doi>10.4000/proceedings.elpub.2019.10</doi><resource>http://elpub.episciences.org/5561</resource><collection property="crawler-based"><item crawler="iParadigms"><resource>https://hal.science/hal-02143129v1/document</resource></item></collection><collection property="text-mining"><item><resource mime_type="application/pdf">https://hal.science/hal-02143129v1/document</resource></item></collection></doi_data></journal_article></journal></body></doi_batch>
